Lost device and recovery key

Lost the device with your vault on it? What you can get back depends on whether you have another device, sync, or your recovery key. We can't open your vault for you.

First, the honest part: we can't recover your vault. Not because we won't, but because we never had the key. That's the whole point of the vault. So it's worth knowing your options before anything goes missing.

Right away: sign the lost device out

  1. On any other device, sign in and go to Settings → Devices.
  2. Find the lost device and revoke it. It's signed out of Aydria.

The vault on that device is still locked behind its Touch ID, Windows Hello, password or passkey, and its own device lock.

Getting your secrets back

You have another device with your vault. Easy. On the new device, open Secrets and scan the QR code with the device you still have. Everything comes across.

Sync was on, and you have your recovery key. On the new device, open Secrets, choose to restore, and enter your 24 words. Your vault comes back from the encrypted copy.

Sync was off (the default), and that was your only device. Then your secrets only existed on the device you lost. Nobody can bring them back, us included. Set up a new vault and add them again. Most are on old letters, bills or your bank's app.

Your recovery key

You get it once, when you set up the vault: 24 words. "Write this down. We can't recover your vault without it." It's optional, and we never see it.

  • Write it on paper and keep it somewhere safe at home.
  • Don't keep it in a photo, an email or a note on the same device.
  • Anyone who has it can open a synced vault, so treat it like a key.

Your cases are fine

Your cases, proof, memory and credits aren't in the vault. They're in your account, so they're all there as soon as you sign in on the new device.
